Whether you're after a cosy pub lunch, a flavour-packed curry, or a café stop after walking the Shropshire Union Canal, Market Drayton has more good food than you'd expect. This guide covers the places I send guests to while they stay at the Monocoque Cabin, each one a short drive away and many welcoming dogs too.

Since its launch in 2023, the Monocoque Cabin has been featured in international architecture and lifestyle publications. It's a dog-friendly, architect-designed cabin on the Shropshire Union Canal, and you can book it directly.

Six dog walks from the Monocoque Cabin at Tyrley Locks: the canal towpath, the 5km lock-flight walk, a countryside loop through Hales, woodland at Burnt Wood and dog-friendly gardens at Hodnet Hall.

Tyrley Locks and the Shropshire Union Canal start at the edge of the cabin garden. From there it's a short trip to gardens, a brewery tap, castle ruins and a working farm. These are the places Rebecca and I put in our guest guide, so you can pick one or two and keep the rest of the day for the cabin.

At Tyrley Locks the first dog walk starts outside the cabin garden. Leave the car parked, follow the Shropshire Union Canal into Market Drayton for something to eat, then walk back. This guide covers the walks, food stops and practical points, including what to know about the garden before you book.

For a weekend away together, the cabin is part of the trip. Breakfast with the door open to the garden, a walk beside the canal, then an evening inside the curved timber shell by the fire. This guide covers how to spend a slow weekend for two at Tyrley Locks.

Thinking about a holiday-let cabin on your own land? Spend a night in a small building first. A photograph won't tell you where wet coats go or how two people share a kitchen. Here is what I would look at during a stay: the layout, the site and how changeovers work.
