If you want a unique cabin stay in Shropshire at any time of year, the Monocoque Cabin is a one-off. Architect-designed and self-built, it sits beside the Shropshire Union Canal at Tyrley Locks, near Market Drayton, and it's dog-friendly.
The Monocoque Cabin was designed and built by RIBA Chartered Architect Peter Markos, and the structure matters as much as the look. The term monocoque comes from aircraft and car engineering: the outer shell carries the loads, so the skin is also the structure. The cabin takes its cue from the plywood-bodied WW2 de Havilland Mosquito.
The principle is rarely applied to small buildings. Here it produces a cabin that feels sculptural and still sits quietly in the landscape. Read the story behind the cabin.

The garden opens straight onto the Shropshire Union Canal towpath, so your first dog walk starts at the gate. Follow the towpath past the Tyrley lock flight and you reach Market Drayton in about 40 minutes. Kingfishers and herons feed along this stretch, and you can fish from the towpath with a rod licence and a club permit.
The cabin is used all year. Three smart heaters and a biofuel fire keep it warm in winter, and in summer the narrowboats work through the locks past the garden. For routes, see my guide to dog walks along the Shropshire Union Canal, or plan a dog-friendly weekend at Tyrley Locks.
