Things to do in and around Market Drayton: a guide from the cabin

By Pete Markos, architect and host of Monocoque Cabin.

If you're staying at the cabin, start with what's outside. Tyrley Locks and the Shropshire Union Canal are beside the garden. You can spend the morning on the towpath, go into Market Drayton for lunch and still have most of the afternoon to yourself.

Rebecca and I put these places in our guest guides to help you choose a day out. There are gardens, a brewery tap, castle ruins and a working farm to visit. Pick one or two that appeal; leave yourself some time to enjoy the cabin too.

Check availability at Monocoque Cabin, our architect-designed cabin for two beside Tyrley Locks.

Start at Tyrley Locks

The flight of five locks is the obvious first walk. When boats are passing through, stop and watch the work involved in moving from one level to the next. The locks, bridges and towpath give you plenty to look at without needing a destination.

For a longer outing, follow the canal towards Market Drayton. Allow around 40 minutes from the cabin, with more time for stops. Wear shoes that can cope with mud and plan the return in daylight: the towpath isn't lit. Our guide to canal walks near Market Drayton covers the walking options in more detail.

Explore Market Drayton's old streets and market

Look up as you walk through the centre. The timber-framed buildings and the Buttercross are part of what makes this an interesting town to wander around, rather than simply somewhere to buy supplies.

Wednesday is the day for the street market along Cheshire Street. The indoor market also opens on Saturdays. If you're here for a midweek break, it is a good reason to head into town in the morning. Check the Town Council's market information before setting out.

Market Drayton is known for gingerbread, so look out for some while you're shopping. For the story behind the town, add Market Drayton Museum & Heritage Centre on Shropshire Street to your plans. Check its opening dates first; it is a small local museum, not an attraction to assume will be open every day.

Have lunch at the Red Lion, Joule's brewery tap

The Red Lion on Great Hales Street sits in front of Joule's Brewery. It is a useful stop after a walk into town: pub food, beer brewed next door and a building with plenty of timber and history of its own. Dogs are welcome under the pub's current policy.

If you want to see the brewery, look at Joule's public brewery tours and book ahead. These run on selected dates, so don't turn up expecting a daily tour. For other lunch and supper options, use our existing Market Drayton restaurants and places to eat guide.

Choose a garden: Hodnet Hall or Dorothy Clive

Hodnet Hall Gardens is one of the places in both our guestbook and Airbnb guide. There are pools, paths and mature planting across 60 acres of gardens and parkland. Give it an afternoon rather than squeezing it between several other stops. Dogs are currently welcome on leads, and opening days are seasonal.

The Dorothy Clive Garden at Willoughbridge is another option from our guestbook. Treat it as a separate outing by car: its own visitor information places it about seven miles from Market Drayton. Dogs can visit on leads, with outdoor seating for anyone stopping at the tearoom with a dog. Check the current opening calendar for whichever garden you choose.

Make time for Hawkstone Park Follies

For a more adventurous landscape, try Hawkstone Park Follies. The cliffs, caves and grottos make it a different sort of walk from the canal. Choose this when you fancy exploring on foot and have proper shoes with you.

Check the opening calendar and access information before booking. The landscape is uneven, and this is a day out to choose around your mobility and the weather. Hawkstone Park Follies and the Hawkstone motocross track mentioned in our guestbook are separate places; make sure you have the right destination in your map.

Visit Fordhall Organic Farm

Fordhall Organic Farm combines farm trails, a farm shop and Arthur's Farm Kitchen. It is a useful choice when you want a walk and something to eat in the same place, or ingredients to bring back for supper.

The farm is community-owned and currently offers free entry. Follow the marked visitor trails and check the shop and café hours before going.

Go a little further for Moreton Corbet Castle

If old buildings interest you, Moreton Corbet Castle, near Shawbury, is worth considering. Medieval castle remains stand beside the shell of an Elizabethan house. It is an open-air place where you can look closely at the surviving walls and imagine how the building changed over time.

English Heritage currently lists free entry during reasonable daylight hours and welcomes dogs on leads. Parking is limited and there are no toilets, so plan it as a stop rather than somewhere with a full set of visitor facilities.

Putting a weekend together

For a first visit, keep one day close to the cabin: Tyrley Locks, a walk into Market Drayton, lunch and a look around the town. Use the other day for one of the gardens, Fordhall or the Follies. You can leave the longer drive for another stay.

A car is the most practical way to reach the cabin and explore beyond town. If you're going out for dinner and want a taxi back, arrange it in advance. Opening days vary, especially outside summer; the venue links above are the best place to check plans shortly before your visit.

A cabin for two beside the canal

We designed and built Monocoque Cabin in 2023. Its curved plywood structure takes its cue from the de Havilland Mosquito, and the timber ribs remain visible inside. There is a double bed, a compact kitchen and a private garden beside the canal.

If you're looking for a romantic cabin stay in Shropshire, that gives you a straightforward weekend: somewhere interesting to stay, places to explore together and space to sit outside when you get back. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, though the garden isn't fully enclosed.
