A dog-friendly weekend at Tyrley Locks, Shropshire

By Pete Markos, architect and host of the Monocoque Cabin. Published 22 September 2026.

The useful thing about staying at Tyrley Locks is that the first dog walk starts outside the garden. You can leave the car parked and follow the Shropshire Union Canal towards Market Drayton. For a weekend here, I would keep the plans simple: a walk into town, something to eat, and time back at the cabin.

Check the garden suits your dog

The Monocoque Cabin sleeps two adults in a double bed and welcomes well-behaved dogs. The garden is private but it is not fully enclosed. If your dog needs a secure boundary, factor that into your choice before booking. Bring a lead for the garden as well as for walks.

This is a working farm beside a working canal. Keep your dog close around livestock and moving boats. The Canal & River Trust's advice for dog walkers includes using a short lead around locks and bridges and clearing up after your dog.

Arrive with the first evening sorted

A car is the most practical way to reach the cabin. There is parking for one car, and Market Drayton is about two miles away by road. Buy anything you need for supper before settling in. The kitchenette has an induction hob, microwave, air fryer and mini fridge, so plan a straightforward meal that fits a small kitchen.

Pack walking shoes that can get muddy, a torch and a towel for your dog. The towpath is unlit. I would save the walk into town for daylight, particularly if you have not stayed here before.

Walk into Market Drayton in daylight

Allow roughly 40 minutes along the towpath from the cabin to Market Drayton, plus time for stops. Turn it into a morning out rather than a timed march. You can watch boats working through the locks and head into town for food before walking back.

My guide to canal walks near Market Drayton covers longer options if you want to extend the day. Choose a route that suits the weather and your dog's stamina. Keep the return journey in mind.

Plan food around the walk

Use the Market Drayton food guide to shortlist somewhere to eat. Check opening hours and the current dog policy with the venue before setting out. If you plan to return by taxi, arrange it in advance; this is not a place to rely on finding one at the last minute.

For the rest of the weekend, leave some space in the diary. The cabin has its own garden beside the canal. You do not need a full driving itinerary to make a stay here worthwhile.
